The Rush for Gold and the Chinese
April 30 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Meet at the Bright Cemetery gates at 9.30 for an informative walk through the Chinese section of the cemetery, followed by a visit to the Bright Museum, where you will hear about the infamous Buckland Riot while enjoying homemade morning tea and also explore the Chinese exhibits in the museum and the replica Joss House. Rain cancels.
In their quest for gold the Chinese outnumbered the population of Europeans in several areas of the Upper Ovens Goldfield. They established well organised, villages (referred to as camps.) Today there is little evidence that the industrious Chinese played such a big part in the early settlement of Bright and surrounds. Where did they go and what happened to their villages?
